Chromatogrphy is a well-established unit operation in Downstream Processing and used for purification of different target molecules since many years. From an economic and technical point of view process development faces always time, mass, cost and quality requirements. This contribution will focus on downstream processing with general requirements and influencing variables in the area of chromatography. In chromatography process development, it is important to comply with the previous mentioned boundary requirements involving various feed streams and stationary phases as well as versatile process parameters and processing modes. Accordingly, the different influencing variables are presented, discussed and based on the chromatogram typical process parameters introduced. As an outlook a processing method to do Rapid Cycling Chromatography (RCC) will be presented as well as needed requirements for systems, but also consumables to fulfil economic aspects.
