Thank you for your interest in this event, hosted by the LBG Open Innovation in Science Center (OIS).

Making Research Count: Challenges in the Evaluation and Valuation of Scientific Work

How research is evaluated shapes not only what is recognized, but also what is produced, rewarded, and made available for potential reuse of outputs, data, and knowledge. This webinar proposes a discussion on the intertwined challenges of assessment, evaluation, and valuation in research, and on how different forms of value are attributed and recognized.

We will explore the role of persistent identifiers for people, organizations, and digital objects. Beyond their technical function, these identifiers are often presented as enablers of transparency, interoperability, and institutional learning, though their actual contribution depends on how they are embedded within broader governance frameworks, organizational cultures, and evaluation practices. They also raise critical questions about who defines value in research and how such value becomes visible across different contexts.

Participants will gain:

  • Perspectives on research evaluation as a socio-technical process with political dimensions

  • Critical insights into how persistent identifiers are framed as supporting transparency, but their contribution depends on being coupled with wider cultural and institutional commitments

  • Reflections on how researchers, evaluators, funders and/or institutions can assume responsibility for aligning their practices with the principles of open and responsible science, and discuss how these practices can generate meaningful forms of value.
