At its core, Astropolitics is a documentary about choices; two possible paths that humans can take as custodians of the planet and beyond. One leads to preservation and the other to possible extinction. Our track record thus far doesn’t inspire much hope. Human history is plagued by a continuous cycle of exploration of new land, exploitation of its resources, and ultimately conflict to control those assets. As countries from every continent race into space, there is a real threat of repeating this same pattern with the fate of mankind hanging in the balance. The United States, Russia and China are the most active space explorers, but they’re no longer alone. French, Indian and Japanese pioneers have long been ramping up their efforts, alongside a host of private companies, probing the economic and security opportunities as far afield as the Moon and Mars. While some view this space race as a zero-sum game in which great power conflict is inevitable, others suggest that abundant resources in the cosmos have the potential to solve existential problems on Earth without firing a shot, if we can only change our collective mindset.
