RDM Network Meeting
Topic: Electronic Lab Notebooks
22 September 2026 | 2:00 - 4:00 pm | on-site: IA 1/83
The documentation of research data plays a vital role in research data management. To this end, Readme files, for example, can be created. However, the question often arises as to how documentation can be done more efficiently and in a standardized manner. In many disciplines, using a tool can provide significant support for establishing a suitable documentation workflow, especially in working groups where documentation should be implemented as uniformly as possible.
Electronic lab notebooks are tools that do exactly that.
Therefore, for our meeting, we will focus on electronic lab notebooks — one of the topics prioritized by the RDM community at RUB. Together, we will try to figure out: What role does the ELN play in research across various academic disciplines? What are the requirements for a central ELN operation? What should be considered when setting up an in-house system? Who can provide support in this process? Are there any best practices or use cases from which we can learn?
Agenda (still being finalized)
- Welcome and updates on central RDM activities at RUB
- Best Practices – Getting Started with ELN (expert insight: Dr. Marcel Marson, UDE)
- Discussion, questions, and exchange of experiences
Who should attend?
All members of the RUB who are interested in electronic lab notebooks are welcome to attend. The network is aimed in particular at researchers, data managers, technical staff, project coordinators, and others who are seeking to improve the day-to-day management of research data and make it more efficient.
