Rauschen, Tropfen, Brummen: In dieser Klangperformance – einer Art Symphonie mit vier Sätzen – wird arktisches Wasser zum Instrument.
Wann werden wir Empathie aufbringen für die Arktis – eine Gegend, die in jeder Minute weiter zerstört wird? Kat Austen hat Klänge der fernen Eiswelt mit Instrumenten aufgenommen, die ursprünglich zur Messung chemischer Eigenschaften von Wasser gedacht waren. In der Performance hält Austen die Messinstrumente in Arktis-Wasser und verändert das Wasser chemisch, so dass sich auch die Töne verändern.

The Matter of the Soul is a musical and sono-sculptural work exploring human empathy with the process of dispersal in the Arctic. It centres around an hour-long experimental music symphony composed of four movements.
Musical compositions for The Matter of the Soul are based around field recordings of Arctic waters made bespoke sound instruments created by adapting scientific equipment that measure chemical properties of water. Austen plays Arctic water live using these instruments during performances by changing their chemical properties.
Kat Austen focuses on environmental issues in her artistic practice. She melds disciplines and media, creating sculptural and new media installations, performances and participatory work. Austen’s practice is underpinned by extensive research and theory, and driven by a motivation to explore how to move towards a more socially and environmentally just future
