Prosthetic heart valves, such as bioprosthetic and mechanical heart valves, have proven over many years to be true lifesavers, yet they have substantial drawbacks: they often need to be replaced after a certain period of time, necessitating another surgery with its associated risks. Moreover, patients typically need to take anticoagulants for the rest of their lives.
