Advanced Data Analysis in R
Die Analyse von Daten, die durch Large Scale Assessments (LSA), also nationale und internationale Schulvergleichsstudien (z. B. PISA, TIMSS, ICCS) bereitgestellt werden, ist herausfordernd. Die Konstruktion der komplexen Stichproben (Schüler*innen in Schulen, Schulen in Ländern) sowie die Datenstruktur (Plausible values statt Punktschätzern für Daten von Kompetenztests in LSA) erfordern die Berücksichtigung besonderer statistischer Verfahren, die korrekte Schätzungen, sowie valide Schlussfolgerungen über Zusammenhänge auf Schüler‑, Schul- und Landesebene ermöglichen.
Der Workshop soll den Teilnehmenden praxisnah folgende Kompetenzen vermitteln:
- Verständnis der statistischen Grundlagen und Annahmen von (internationalen) Large Scale Assessments wie ICCS 2022
- Sicherheit im Umgang mit relevanten R-Paketen
- Umsetzung von Modellierungen mit LSA-Daten unter Berücksichtigung komplexer Stichprobendesigns
- fortgeschrittene Datenanalysen, wie Regressionsanalysen und Mehrebenenmodellen

Analysing data provided by large-scale assessments (LSA), i.e. national and international school comparison studies such as PISA, TIMSS, or ICCS, is challenging. The construction of complex samples (students in schools, schools in countries) and the data structure (plausible values instead of point estimators for data from competence tests in LSA) require the use of specific statistical methods that enable to calculate correct estimates and draw valid conclusions about correlations at the level of student, schools, and countries.
This workshop addresses researchers and early-career scholars who wish to deepen their understanding of the methodological foundations and the analysis of large-scale assessment data (in particular ICCS). It aims to enable participants to further develop the following competencies:
- Understanding the statistical foundations and assumptions of (international) large-scale assessments such as ICCS 2022
- Building confidence in working with relevant R packages
- Conducting modelling with large-scale assessment data while accounting for complex sampling designs
- Advanced data analyses, such as regression and multilevel models
The workshop is organised by the Civic Education Research Lab [https://www.college-uaruhr.de/research/postdoclab/civic-education-research-lab], a working group within the PostdocLab programme.
