Transformation of the world of work is on everyone's lips. Research in this field is now well established but fragmented and scattered across the various disciplines. The challenges and changes span employees, employers and their respective representatives, the structures of companies and businesses, the labour markets and regulation itself, the social security systems and their embedding framework. The newly emerging and existing employment patterns across various sectors present both opportunities and challenges for access to and coverage of the social protection systems. The emergence of new economic and ecological drivers, such as technological advancements, decarbonisation, (de-)globalisation, and shifting demographic patterns, necessitates critically examining their impacts on labour markets and their institutional framework, such as social policies. This interdisciplinary lunch time seminar series aims to foster a deeper understanding of these transformations and their implications for ensuring equitable access to social protection. The seminar, therefore, asks from a company and sectoral perspective which existing or new forms of social policy governance and regulation are (still) needed or need to be developed further to ensure that social protection is future-oriented and resilient.
The Contribution of the Seminar
The interdisciplinary lunch time seminar series brings together scholars and other experts from various disciplines who contribute their insights, research findings, and theoretical perspectives on the designated theme. Talks include presentations on ongoing or completed empirical research, theoretical papers, case studies, or reflective essays. We are open to a wide variety of methods and methodological approaches and welcome country comparisons as well as country studies also from outside Germany.
Seminar Objectives:
- To explore the primary drivers of sectoral economic transformations, including advancements in technology, environmental sustainability, shifts in global trade dynamics, and demographic changes.
- To assess the impact of these transformations on the existing sectoral employment types, wage structures, and job security.
- To examine the role of social policies in ensuring equal access to social protection for diverse populations within the new economic frameworks.
- To discuss future-oriented forms of social policies to learn from already existing and /or ongoing institutional experimentation in other countries.
- To encourage interdisciplinary dialogue among scholars from sociology, economics, political science, and other relevant fields.
