Invitation to Expert Panel for buildingSMART Project IFC4precast
Would you like to participate in in the creation of open digital workflows for the specification and use of precast concrete?
buildingSMART International and the project IFC4precast would like to invite domain experts from the industry to participate in the Expert Panel for IFC4precast. The project is ongoing and well developed, and consists of a core project group with representatives from both the industry leading technology providers and users.

To reach international consensus and to succeed in creating an internationally standardized interface we now wish to reach out to the larger community to engage in an expert panel to review the deliverables of the project and support standard finalization.
Both members and non-members of buildingSMART can participate in the expert panel.
What is the project aiming to achieve?
IFC is already used as a standard exchange format between architectural CAD and precast CAD, but at the moment it is not prepared to exchange production data (specific especially for automated production) between precast CAD, precast MES (manufacturing execution systems) and precast ERP/PPS (Production Planning Software) systems. Current interfaces between precast CAD and MES are inflexible and unable to adapt to new requirements.
The project is aimed at creating an internationally standardized interface maintained by the industry, based on existing interfaces already established in the prefabrication process. As prefabricated products are getting more complicated, demand for a more capable model exchange interface is on the rise.
More specifically the objectives of the project are
- To bring open BIM stronger into the Precast domain
- To get CAD, MES and PPS systems more closely linked together on a more commonly held data exchange, that each system is able to make more area specific decisions
- By exchanging over the international standard IFC
- Clearer traceability of data over the building model and building cycle
The project is supported by the buildingSMART International community and the project group consists of members representing the industry, namely:
- AEC3 Deutschland GmbH
- bwb Beteiligungsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG
- IDAT GmbH
- Precast Software Engineering GmbH
- Progress Software Development GmbH
- RIB SAA Software Engineering GmbH
- Trimble Germany GmbH
- Unitechnik Systems GmbH
Timeline and deliverables
The project will deliver IDM[1], MVD[2] online documentation, mvdXML schema.
- July 2018: IDM
- August 2018: MVD
- June 2019: Publication of ifc4precast interface V1.0
- June 2020: Certification environment ready
Who are we looking for?
For a broad international consensus and high quality of the final product, we want to engage domain experts with experience knowledge on precast automation software systems and interfaces, especially Unitechnik CAD-CAM Interface and PXML, and knowledge on PCI-001 MVD.
We believe it will be beneficial for the first Expert Panel Meeting to be face-to-face. We would therefore invite domain experts to Frankfurt a.M.
Further schedule for the Expert Panels will be defined at the first meeting.
