EconData Workshop
This workshop is organized by BERD@NFDI in cooperation with the Digital Research Academy (DRA) and the Institute for Employment and Research (IAB).
About
Curious how others handle ethical or governance challenges around data access and privacy? Do you have data that drives you crazy and need somebody to talk about it? Wondering if you have the best method to get the most out of your data?
Or maybe you just have a data-related question that has been on your mind for a while, but you have not had the right space to ask it?
If you have questions likes these, we invite you to join us for an engaging unconference-style workshop fostering collaboration and innovation across business, economics, and related research fields. Share insights, connect with peers, and create tangible outcomes on topics like reproducible research, unstructured data, and AI.
This workshop will follow an unconference format. Think of an unconference as the opposite of a typical academic conference. No endless slide decks, no panels you have to sit through - just people who work with, study, and care about data coming together to talk about what they find most interesting.
When you arrive, you help build the schedule by suggesting topics you would like to explore - anything from open data and reproducibility to machine learning ethics, large language models, economic modeling, data governance, or visualization techniques. Then you join the sessions that inspire you most.
It is spontaneous, energetic, and powered by the participants. No prerequisites are needed. It does not matter whether you are a researcher, data enthusiast, or simply have a data related job, everybody is welcome. Just come with your questions, your laptop, and leave with fresh strategies.
Event Highlights
Day 1 (Half Day: 13.00 - 17.00)
Kick off with your most pressing questions and dive straight into hands-on sessions. Collaborate with peers who share your challenges or offer a new perspective. Explore methods, tools, and approaches together - this is your chance to experiment, learn, and hack.
Day 2 (Full Day: 9:00 – 17:00)
Continue working on your data challenges and refine your solutions. Wrap up with concrete outcomes, such as best practice guides, code snippets, or new strategies. Share your insights and take away practical ideas to support your future research.
How to Participate?

About the Instructor

Ilona Lipp is the Open Science Officer at the University of Leipzig, promoting and supporting transparency and integrity in research. She has over 12 years of research experience in interdisciplinary neuroscience in Austria, the UK, and Germany. With additional training in coaching, mediation and didactics, Ilona now helps scientists navigate academia and optimize their research practices, for example as a trainer for the Digital Research Academy.

Carolina Natel is a postdoctoral researcher at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Her work combines process-based models, data science, and machine learning to study how climate and land-use change affect ecosystem functioning. She is also a trainer with the Digital Research Academy, focusing on open science, data science, and reproducible research.
