Online Feeding Cities Conference -  Seeds of Change: Transforming Food System

Thursday, 11 July 2024, 09:30 AM - 01:30 PM CET

The transformation of a food system is not without its challenges, but fortunately, we have plenty of success stories to share. Building on the success of the first Feeding Cities conference last June, this second edition promises to be an enriching event. Join us as we take stock of the countless ways in which food systems are transforming, aiming to provide a space to share seeds of change. This conference will build on the four core themes that emerged from last year’s conference. After almost four years of FUSILLI, we would like to invite you to this event to highlight best practices, share lessons learned, and discuss challenges overcome during the food system transformation process.

The conference will open with an inspiring keynote, by Emma Haske from FOSTER Food System, “Building Bridges to Social Movements for radical re-imagination of new food systems“. This speech aims to open up a discussion on what is needed for a radical re-imagining of our food systems by exploring the value of radicalized perspectives and knowledge, both historically and in the present. How can we, as change-makers, push for transformation within the context of institutional constraints and norms?

This part will be followed by interactive presentations and discussions following the style of the Hungry for Exchange webinar webinar series, "Waste-Less Cities: Smart Solutions for Urban Food Sustainability". FUSILLI's representatives from the City of Athens and the City of Rijeka will provide valuable insights into their best practices and planned solutions related to sustainability and food waste reduction.

Look forward to contributions from:

  • Giorgos Keranis, Action research practitioner and policy analyst specializing in sustainable food systems and social economy, collaborating with the Municipality of Athens for the FUSILLI project.
  • Emira Brkić Karninčić, Researcher working on projects in sustainable urban development and smart city solutions as part of Rijeka's FUSILLI team

In the last part of the conference, you will have the chance to participate actively and share your insights into the seeds of change in a peer-led discussion around the urban role of food system transformation. This will take place in parallel breakout rooms, stimulating lively, small-group conversations around the four core themes of the conference:

1. Governance and lack of political will around food

2. Funding and projectification of food topics

3. Stakeholder engagement

4. Economic system failure in supporting food system transformations

Keynote Speaker Bio

Emma Haske - Emma is an anthropologist and PhD candidate who aims to understand how self/other imaginaries foster or hinder solidarity, equality, and collaboration for radical food system transformation. Through three different case studies across Serbia, Germany, and the Netherlands, Emma and her camera zoom in on relationships between people with different economic and political power. As a scholar-activist, she utilizes her interest in emotions and affect by using film as a tool to arouse emotional reflexivity, encouraging various groups of people to reconstruct their imaginaries of ‘the other’ and create transformative relationships built on affective solidarity.
