Info

Teaching in English can be both exciting and challenging—especially for non-native speaker. At TU Darmstadt, many instructors face the task of teaching diverse student groups in English, often as a shared foreign language.

This workshop provides practical and theoretical insights into teaching in English as a medium of instruction at TU Darmstadt. An international university population is a dynamic environment. Therefore, this workshop aims to better prepare university teachers to anticipate and acknowledge the linguistic and consequently cultural needs of students in the classroom. Together with their colleagues, participants will explore how context, expectations and beliefs influence teaching and learning. Using targeted linguistic tools and a few useful phrases, participants will collaborate to develop strategies for communicating when teaching in English as a shared foreign language and language of instruction. The workshop culminates in (very) short individual presentations and group discussions.

Learning outcomes: The participants will …

  • be able to identify and reflect on the linguistic and cultural challenges of teaching in English as a shared foreign language in a diverse university setting.
  • develop strategies to adapt teaching methods and communication styles to meet the needs of multilingual and multicultural student groups.
  • be able to apply targeted linguistic tools and useful phrases to enhance clarity and engagement when teaching in English
