MasterPlus offers an online German language course at A1 level exclusively for Late Arrivals. The course allows you to start learning German while you are still abroad and helps you prepare for everyday life and studying in Germany.

Why learn German?
Even if your Master’s programme is taught entirely in English, basic German can make a real difference to your experience in Germany. It will help you manage everyday situations, connect with people and feel more at home in Darmstadt.
German language skills can also be an important advantage if you are considering staying and working in Germany after graduation. Starting early gives you the opportunity to build your skills throughout your studies.

Course fees and materials
The course is free of charge for MasterPlus students.
However, participants are required to purchase the following course materials:
Course book: €28.99
Grammar book: €22.99
The total cost for the required course materials is €51.98.

What will you learn?
This course is an introduction to the German language. You will develop basic speaking and writing skills, build your vocabulary and practise communicating in everyday situations.
Through speaking and writing exercises as well as discussions, you will learn to understand and use simple German. The course also helps you develop language skills for communicating and studying in a university environment.
Who can participate?
This course is exclusively for MasterPlus Late Arrivals starting their Master’s programme at TU Darmstadt in the winter semester 2026/27.
To participate, you must:
be a Late Arrival, i.e. arrive in Darmstadt after the start of the semester
be officially enrolled in a MasterPlus-participating department at TU Darmstadt by 16 October 2026
provide suitable proof of your Late Arrival
be able to participate regularly in the online classes
plan sufficient time for independent study between classes
participate in the required written and oral examinations
Technical requirements
As the classes take place online, you will need:
a computer or laptop with a camera
a microphone
a stable internet connection
a suitable environment for active participation in the online classes
Please note the workload
This is an intensive university language course worth 6 credit points. The total workload is approximately 180 hours, including 80 hours of classes and approximately 100 hours of individual study.
Regular attendance and independent study are essential. A maximum of four absences is permitted.
Please pre-register only if you intend to participate regularly and complete the entire course.
How does registration work?
Places are limited to 25 participants. Therefore, submitting a pre-registration does not automatically guarantee a place in the course.
Complete the pre-registration form by 12 October 2026.
Send suitable proof of your Late Arrival by email to masterplus@zv.tu-darmstadt.de by 12 October 2026.
We will review your eligibility.
You will receive an email informing you whether you have been admitted to the course.
Suitable proof may include, for example, a travel booking showing your arrival date or documentation related to a delayed or ongoing visa process. If you are unsure which document to provide, please contact us.
Important: You must be officially enrolled at TU Darmstadt by 16 October 2026 in order to participate in the course.
