Local wealth means more than economic prosperity in cities. By adding social value to public procurement practices, money recirculates among empowered and collaborative communities, labour opportunities and conditions are improved, and the carbon footprint would be reduced. What strategies could be adopted to reach these outcomes? This workshop will revise key activities, tools and actors for understanding strategic procurement as an opportunity for the generation of local wealth rather than a technical bureaucratic process based mainly on monetary criteria.

Matthew Baqueriza-Jackson is an expert on strategic procurement with more than 12 years of experience in the field. He is currently an independent policy advisor, chair of the Greater Manchester Social Value Network (GMSVN) and representative of URBACT in the EU Urban Agenda Partnership on Responsible and Innovative Public Procurement. He is also a former Deputy Chief Executive of the Centre for Local Economic Strategies (CLES) and helped to devise the Community Wealth Building agenda in the United Kingdom context.

Von Internationalen Best-Practice Beispielen zu lokalen Umsetzungsstrategien

Ein nachhaltiger Wandel hängt von einer Gesellschaft ab, die in der Lage ist, die sozialen und ökologischen Herausforderungen unserer Zeit zu bewältigen. Eine wichtige Aufgabe ist die Beseitigung von Armut (hier „Zero Poverty“). Dafür benötigen wir ein Wirtschaftssystem, das sich auf die Grundbedürfnisse der Gemeinschaft und die nachhaltige Bewirtschaftung der natürlichen Ressourcen fokussiert.

Verschiedene Städte und Gemeinden auf der ganzen Welt entwickeln Strategien, um Armut zu bekämpfen und die lokale Wirtschaft zu stärken. Einer der bekanntesten ist der sogenannte Community Wealth Building Ansatz. Dieser bietet lokale Lösungen, die auf Zusammenarbeit, Social Value und einer demokratischeren Wirtschaft beruhen.

In dieser Workshop-Reihe betrachten wir Ansätze und Strategien, die darauf abzielen Armut zu bekämpfen und auf lokaler Ebene sozialen Wohlstand erschaffen. Wir stellen internationale Best- Practice Beispiele vor und schauen, wie eine Übertragbarkeit für eine zukünftige, nachhaltige Stadt Kiel aussehen könnte.

Die Reihe wird gemeinsam von der Kieler School of Sustainability und der Akademie für Social Entrepreneurship angeboten und richtet sich in erster Linie an Studierende. Gleichzeitig sind alle Veranstaltungen geöffnet für ein interessiertes Publikum. Wir freuen uns über Teilnehmer*innen, die sich entweder bereits mit dem Thema beschäftigt haben oder mehr darüber erfahren möchten und empfehlen eine Teilnahme an allen Veranstaltungen!

Die Veranstaltungen der Reihe finden teilweise auf Englisch und teilweise auf Deutsch statt (siehe Beschreibungen). Die Anmeldung erfolgt jeweils für eine Einzelveranstaltung.

Workshop 1: Keine Armut in Kiel?!

Fragen zu Wohlstand und Armut betreffen uns alle. Obwohl Deutschland ein Industrie- und Sozialstaat ist, der Sicherheitsnetze für sozial benachteiligte Menschen spannt, ist die ungleiche Verteilung von Wohlstand auch in Kiel sichtbar und die Armutszahlen – auch die von Kindern – sind seit Jahren stagnierend hoch. Warum akzeptieren wir das? Oder was wird dagegen unternommen und was kann jede*r von uns tun? Durch diesen Impuls, als Startschuss unserer Veranstaltungsreihe, bekommt ihr einen thematischen Überblick, sowie Zahlen, Fakten und Indikatoren zum lokalen Status Quo.

Workshop 2: Wie viel Armut braucht der Kapitalismus?

Macht, Wohlstandsverteilung und die Definition von Armut selbst nehmen unter dem vorherrschenden Wirtschaftsmodell unterschiedliche Formen an. In der Diskussion über Armut muss also unbedingt das Verhältnis zum Kapitalismus berücksichtigt werden. Inwieweit schafft und erhält der Kapitalismus Armut? Wo können und müssen wir Wirtschaft neu denken und anders handeln? In diesem Workshop wird über die strukturellen Bedingungen diskutiert, unter denen Armut entsteht. Oft genug dienen diese als Rechtfertigung für Entwicklungsdiskurse, die, obwohl sie manchmal "grün" sind, schädliche soziale und ökologische Folgen haben.

Workshop 3: The success of Community Wealth Building

Global challenges can be withstood and resisted by strong empowered communities. As an alternative to the dominant economic model, Community Wealth Building seeks to hold, share and democratize wealth within local contexts. What strategies and practical tools underpin this approach? This workshop offers a general understanding of the approach, as well as a review of successful examples in the United Kingdom.

Workshop 4: Cooperation: the key for economic transformation

Community, collaboration, cooperation, co-production - four „co“ words that drive transpormation. As opposed to the traditional economic model, strategies involving plural ownership - such as cooperatives or community land-trusts, among others - drive alternative ways of generating shared wealth. What is required for this type of economic transformation? By discussing practical examples, this workshop offers a look into the methods, tools and stakeholders necessary for generating community-based forms of wealth generation.

Local wealth means more than economic prosperity in cities. By adding social value to procurement, investment and banking practices, money recirculates among empowered and collaborative communities. This holds the potential to improve labour opportunities and conditions and reduce carbon footprint . Which existing strategies could be adopted to reach these outcomes? This workshop will revise key activities, tools and actors for the generation and recirculation of local financial assets. At the same time, it will take a look at existing examples that support local employment and keep wealth within communities.
