Agri-Environmental Cooperation: Collective solutions for mutual challenges

Cooperative farmland biodiversity protection is gaining traction as an effective approach within the framework of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). This approach, inspired by successful implementations in the Netherlands, aims to coordinate agri-environment-climate measures (AECM) at the landscape level through farmer cooperatives.

The potential benefits of cooperative models are considered to be significant. They can enhance the effectiveness of biodiversity protection measures by allowing for coordinated actions across larger areas, potentially reducing the bureaucratic burden on individual farmers and authorities. Moreover, such approaches align with the CAP's environmental goals, particularly in enhancing biodiversity and ecosystem services through the diversification of agricultural landscapes. However, challenges remain in adapting and implementing such models in different national contexts.

In this workshop, we will explore success stories of cooperative approaches and obstacles that need to be overcome to broadly incorporate cooperative farmland biodiversity protection in the EU.
