Workshop Online and in Presence

Day 1 online - Day 2 in presence: The in-person part of the workshop will take place at two different dates. You will be divided into two groups, with each group attending only one of the two days.

Date: day 1: 14.07.2026 all participants online
day 2: in two groups in presence either on 15.07. or 16.07.; contact the trainer John via mail if you prefer 15. or 16.07.; otherwise, he will assign you a day in advance so that you still can coordinate your week.

Course description
This workshop is designed for doctoral researchers from all research fields to enhance presentation skills and boost their confidence when sharing research findings. You will learn and practice essential techniques to make your presentations more engaging and effective.

Key topics include:

  • The power of storytelling in research: Discover how to structure your presentation as a compelling narrative. Stories captivate audiences, and research naturally contains elements of a good story. Learn how to tailor your story to your audience’s level of understanding.
  • Designing effective slides: Master the art of creating clear and concise slides. Avoid overwhelming your audience with too much information. Simpler slides lead to better comprehension and more productive discussions.
  • Mastering Q&A sessions: Engage with your audience effectively. Learn strategies to handle challenging questions and turn discussions into opportunities for collaboration and deeper understanding.
  • Body language and presence: Understand the impact of non-verbal communication. Learn how to use body language to your advantage, enhancing your credibility and connection with your audience.

Trainer: 
John Kluempers, PhD, is a native English speaker and has his doctorate in linguistics. Afterwards, he moved to Tokyo, Japan where taught at numerous colleges and universities. Upon returning to Germany, he actively used his voice for nearly a decade as a news and sports broadcaster for Deutsche Welle’s English service. Additionally, Dr. Kluempers is an expert for professional and scientific English and a member of Toastmasters International, an organization where people become better public speakers with theatre experience in addition.
