The biomass gap is no longer a future scenario but a pressing policy challenge. Addressing it requires more than increasing supply – it calls for new ways of using biomass fairly, efficiently, and within ecological limits. This conference explores practical, shared solutions for a resource-efficient and socially just bioeconomy within planetary boundaries.
As demand for biogenic resources grows, the key challenge is how to stay within ecological limits while ensuring sustainable use. The EU Commission’s Joint Research Centre warns that a significant biomass gap is likely without decisive action.
In response, denkhausbremen, FERN and Ekoskog bring together researchers, policymakers, civil society actors and practitioners to explore concrete pathways forward.
The conference will address:
- the biomass gap in the context of climate and biodiversity crises
- policy instruments for governing biomass use
- shifting biomass from energy to material use
- reducing demand, including through lower industrial livestock production
- scaling reuse systems for a circular economy
