Mit dem von buildingSMART Deutschland organisierten und zusammen mit Partnern entwickelten BIM Fit Check können Softwareunternehmen die BIM-Fähigkeit ihrer Produkte in Bezug auf verschiedene Anwendungsfälle belegen – und ihre Lösung inklusive der Workflows live einem Fachpublikum präsentieren.
Die Idee
Der BIM-Standard IFC und ergänzende Open-BIM-Standards wie das BIM Collaboration Format (BCF) unterstützen den Datenaustausch und die Kommunikation in der Baubranche. Die Qualität der Implementierung hängt von den Eigenheiten eines jeden Softwareprodukts ab. Um einen nahtlosen Austausch von BIM-Daten und eine reibungslose Zusammenarbeit zu gewährleisten, müssen unterschiedliche Software-Tools jedoch verlässlich miteinander kommunizieren können. Dafür sollten die bereits vorhandenen Standards eingesetzt werden.
Durch die Lösung einer praktischen Aufgabenstellung im Rahmen des BIM Fit Checks mit einem klar abgegrenzten Implementierungsumfang streben wir danach, die Lücke zwischen den Bedürfnissen der Anwender und der Standardimplementierung zu schließen und gleichzeitig allen Teilnehmern ein spannendes Erlebnis zu bieten.
In der Ausgabe 2026 steht das „BIM Collaboration Format (BCF)" im Fokus.
Warum gerade jetzt BCF?
Eine buildingSMART-Arbeitsgruppe hat in umfangreichen Tests die Implementierungsqualität von BCF in marktüblichen Softwareanwendungen analysiert und gelangte dabei zu aufschlussreichen Ergebnissen: Keine der getesteten Software-Lösungen war in der Lage, eine vollständig BCF 2.1 kompatible Datei zu generieren. Insbesondere wurden essenzielle Funktionen wie BIMsnippets, das Anfügen von Dokumenten oder externe Links nicht unterstützt.
Da es bisher keinen offenen Dialog zu den benutzerspezifischen Anforderungen und der weiteren Entwicklung von BCF gab, hat die Arbeitsgruppe es sich zum Ziel gesetzt, Endbenutzer und Softwareentwickler zusammenzubringen, um Standardprozesse zu definieren und einen Kern von Attributen zu identifizieren, die für die tägliche Arbeit benötigt werden.
Hier setzt der BIM Fit Check 2026 an: Wir wollen gemeinsam mit Ihnen die Qualität der BCF-Implementierung praxisnah testen, Lücken identifizieren und die Basis für einen zukünftigen reibungslosen Prozess schaffen.
Die vier Anwendungsfälle im Fokus
Die Arbeitsgruppe hat folgende, regelmäßig in Projekten auftauchende Anwendungsfälle definiert, um daraus einen möglichen Standardprozess zu generieren:
- Koordination einer Kollision zwischen einem Model-Checker und 2 CAD-Systemen
- Frage durch Projektbeteiligte in einem CDE (Common Data Environment) mit Antwort aus einem CAD-System
- Bilaterale Kommunikation zwischen CAD-Systemen
- Mängelmanagement auf der Baustelle mit Hilfe eines CDE
Diese Anwendungsfälle wurden iterativ in einen gemeinsamen Standardprozess überführt und bilden die Grundlage für die Aufgabenstellung des BIM Fit Check 2026.

Vor Ihrer verbindlichen Teilnahmezusage bieten wir für Interessenten des BIM Fit Checks zwei Online-Info-Veranstaltungen an, bei denen wir Ihre Fragen rund um den BIM Fit Check beantworten und weitere Details zu Ablauf, Aufgabenstellung, Testprozess und Bewertungskriterien erläutern.
Folgende Termine stehen zur Auswahl (die Teilnahme an einem der Termine ist ausreichend, unverbindlich und kostenfrei):

Vorbereitungsphase
In Absprache mit den Teilnehmern bieten wir ein Support-Meeting (online) zur Klärung von Fragen zur Lösung der Aufgabenstellungen.

- Wöchentlicher Jour fixe-Termin (jeweils dienstags von 16 Uhr bis 17 Uhr ab dem 10. Februar 2026 (Fit-Phase)

Der Testprozess
Die Bestimmung der tatsächlichen Implementierungsqualität wird durch Analyse von importierten und exportierten BCF-Dateien aus Ihren Softwareanwendungen durchgeführt.
So läuft der Test ab
Um aussagekräftige Ergebnisse zu erhalten, werden BCF-Daten aus einem standardisierten IFC-Testmodell mit vordefinierten Merkmalsätzen abgeleitet.
Import/Export in Ihrem Testsystem
Die zuvor generierten BCF-Testdaten werden in Ihr Testsystem importiert und dort abgeändert, um anschließend eine Auswertung gemäß der BCF 3.0 Spezifikation und den Anforderungen aus den vier Anwendungsfällen vorzunehmen.
Alle Ergebnisse werden in einem standardisierten Format erfasst.

Organized by buildingSMART Germany and developed in collaboration with partners, the BIM Fit Check enables software companies to demonstrate the BIM capabilities of their products in relation to various use cases – and to present their solutions, including workflows, live to an audience of experts.
The idea
The BIM standard IFC and complementary openBIM standards such as the BIM Collaboration Format (BCF) support data exchange and communication in the construction industry. The quality of implementation depends on the specific characteristics of each software product. However, to ensure seamless exchange of BIM data and smooth collaboration, different software tools must be able to communicate reliably with each other. Existing standards should be used for this purpose.
By solving a practical task with a clearly defined scope within the framework of the BIM Fit Check, we strive to close the gap between user needs and standard implementation while offering an exciting experience for all participants.
The 2026 edition focuses on the BIM Collaboration Format (BCF).
Why BCF now?
A buildingSMART working group conducted extensive tests to analyze the implementation quality of BCF in commercially available software applications and came to a revealing conclusion: None of the software solutions tested was able to generate a file that was fully compatible with BCF 2.1. In particular, essential functions such as BIM snippets, attaching documents, or external links were not supported.
Because there has been no open dialogue on user-specific requirements and the further development of BCF to date, the working group has set itself the goal of bringing end users and software developers together to define standard processes and identify a core set of features that are needed for everyday work.
This is where the BIM Fit Check BCF 2026 comes in: We want to work with you to test the quality of BCF implementation in a practical way, identify gaps, and lay the foundation for a smooth process in the future.
Four use cases in focus
The working group has defined the following use cases, which regularly arise in projects, in order to generate a possible standard process:
- Coordination of a collision between a model checker and two CAD systems
- Question from project participants in a CDE (Common Data Environment) with answer from a CAD system
- Bilateral communication between CAD systems
- Defect management on the construction site with the help of a CDE
These use cases were iteratively translated into a common standard process and form the basis for the BIM Fit Check 2026 task.

Before you apply to participate, we offer two online info events for those interested in the BIM Fit Check. The purpose of these info events is to answer your questions about the BIM Fit Check and explain further details about the procedure, tasks, test process, and evaluation criteria.
The following dates are available (participation in one of the dates is sufficient, non-binding, and free of charge):
- Tuesday, 27 January, 2026, 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m CET.
- Thursday, 29 January, 2026, 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m CET.
The procedure, phases, and timeline of the BIM Fit Check
Preparation phase
In consultation with the participants, we offer a weekly support meeting (online) to clarify questions about solving the tasks.
Implementation phase
- 3 February, 2026: Kick-off event for the BIM Fit Check 2026
- Weekly meeting (every Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. starting 10 February, 2026 (fit phase)
- April 2026 Check phase (online), exact dates to be agreed upon together
- 13 May, 2026: Participants in the BIM Fit Check 2026 will present their solutions to the tasks set for the BIM Collaboration Format (BCF) use case live to an expert audience at the 23rd buildingSMART User Day 2026 in Berlin
- 13 May, 2026: Awarding of the digital badges “BIM Fit Check 2026 – BIM Collaboration Format”
The test process
The quality of the implementation is determined by analyzing imported and exported BCF files from your software applications.
How the test works
In order to obtain meaningful results, BCF data is derived from a standardized IFC test model with predefined property sets.
Import/export in your test system
The previously generated BCF test data is imported into your test system and modified there in order to then perform an evaluation in accordance with the BCF 3.0 specification and the requirements from the four use cases.
All results are recorded in a standardized format.

- For the import area: coordination, viewer, issue management, and CDE software
