Input Defensio – Doctoral Defence Training

Content

Following a long and intensive period of academic work, the doctoral defence represents a highlight in a doctoral candidate’s academic career. Given its significance, however, the defence comes with a variety of concerns and a number of myths. This workshop offers background information, step-by-step practical exercises and practical guidance.

The training prepares participants for the two key components of the doctoral defence: the defensio, i.e. the response to comments from the dissertation reports, and the disputatio, i.e. the scientific presentation followed by a discussion. The workshop focuses on the requirements of a successful defence, effective preparation strategies and approaches for handling challenging questions with confidence.

This workshop consists of a half-day of input, discussion and practical exercises. It is suitable both for PhD candidates who are already preparing for their defence and for those who would like to familiarize themselves with the process and expectations at an early stage.

Key topics

  • A overview of the doctoral defence
  • The defensio: dealing with dissertation reports and examination questions
  • Rhetorical strategies and conversation psychology in examination situations

Methods

  • Strong focus on practical application and transfer to participants' own defence situation
  • Trainer input: keynote presentations and expert guidance
  • In-depth individual and group exercises
  • Ensuring transfer to practice through individual preparation and defence strategies
